Slimzee belongs to a generation for whom broadcasting was inseparable from building. The public-facing role was the DJ: selecting records, controlling pace, reading MCs and listeners. Behind it sat the less visible labour of sustaining an unlicensed station — studios, equipment, schedules, relationships, risk and constant adaptation. Rinse's own biography describes him as a pirate-radio veteran and co-founder. The station's three-decade history places him at the beginning of an institution that moved through jungle, garage, grime, dubstep and beyond. His particular contribution was curatorial and performative. His sets provided room for hard, sparse and emerging records, and for MCs to develop through extended live sessions. His association with early recordings involving figures such as Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, D Double E and Riko Dan is central to his reputation. Slimzee's return to regular radio in the 2010s, and continued work around 140 BPM music, connect two technological periods — demonstrating that the same curatorial values can exist on licensed FM, digital radio, online video and streaming.
